“I Have a Dream”
Martin Luther King Jr. was arguably the greatest civil rights activist of all time. He was a national icon for 12 years until his death in 1968 when he was assassinated. King also had a quality that was hard to find among African Americans. He was not afraid of danger. King would lead marches into big cities, knowing that there is a possibility of physical violence that will be forced upon him and his followers. King’s valor was hard to find, but he proved to the nation that he wasn’t afraid of anything.
King was a man of non-violence. He did not want anyone getting hurt because what good would that do? King had help on his side from the most powerful man in the world. John F. Kennedy had the intentions to stop discrimination and continue to improve the
equality throughout the United States. In fact, he wanted to allow blacks employment, and the right to vote.
In August of 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the most powerful and famous civil rights speech of all time. King’s “I have a dream” speech, was presented in front of 250,000 people, and is known by everyone in the United States and possibly millions
worldwide. His speech covered many topics including: patriotism, religion, the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence. The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, following Kennedy’s death. King was assassinated in 1968 while
leading a strike in Memphis.
