Malcolm Little arrested and prison time – In 1946 at age 20 Malcolm went to prison for breaking and entering. After his parole in 1952 he quickly rose to become a leader of the Nation of Islam.
*Murder of Medgar Evers – Medgar Evers was born on July 2, 1925. Evers was African American civil rights activists from Mississippi involved in efforts to upturn segregation at the University of Mississippi. After returning from overseas armed service in World War 2 and completing his secondary education he became active in the civil rights movement. In the early morning of June 12, 1963 Evers pulled into his driveway got out of his car and was shot, by Bryon De La Beckwith, in the back. He was rushed to the hospital and 50 minutes later he died.
*Malcolm X assassinated – On February 21, 1965 Malcolm X prepared to address the Organization of Afro-American Unity when a disturbance broke out in the crowd of 400 people a man in the front row rushed forward and shot him once in the chest. Two other men charged at the stage and shot him several times. From February 23-26 an estimated 14,000 to 30,000 attended his funeral.
*Murder of Emmitt Till – He was born July 25, 1941. He was an African American boy who was murdered after flirting with a white woman. The murder was committed in Mississippi, August 28, 1955. Till was from Chicago but he was visiting residents in Mississippi. The woman who he was speaking with was Carolyn Bryant. He was murdered by Carolyn’s husband. Till was brutally beaten, shot in the head, and then thrown into the Tallahatchie River. He was 14 years old.
