*Ruby Bridges – This person was born on September 8, 1954. When she was 4 years old, the family relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1960, when she was 6 years old, her parents responded to a request form the Association for the Advancement of Colored People. This Association asked her to participate in the integration of the New Orleans School system. She was one of 6 black children to pass the test that determined whether or not the black children will attend the all-white school.
*Tommie Smith and John Carlos – These athletes competed in the 1968 Olympics. The Black Power salute was a protest made by these African American athletes. As they turned to face their flags and hear the national anthem they each raised a black-gloved fist. This created a huge political statement in modern time Olympic Games.
